HOLLYWOOD, CA – Professional skateboarder and esteemed actor, Paul Rodriguez Jr. (aka P-Rod), will star in the newest film from the Air Bud series, Air Bud: Old Dog, New Tricks, slated to begin production in the fall of this year. The skateboard film will again star Buddy as himself, who has maintained the role since the series began in 1997.
Buddy’s co-star, P-Rod, will expand his acting resume, which is highlighted by another skateboarding comedy, Street Dreams. He has expressed excitement about working with Buddy, saying, “I ask my friends ‘What’s up, dog?’ all the time, so Buddy will fit in great, since he’s an actual dog.” Rodriguez is not too concerned about Buddy’s lack of skateboard experience either, “Buddy has an impressive track record for learning quickly. I don’t expect him to throw down a NAC, but he’ll be able to learn a trick or two.”
Meanwhile, Buddy, a golden retriever, has slowed down in recent years, suffering from a number of ailments that are common among elderly canines. However, his deteriorating vision and loss of hearing are viewed with cautious optimism. “Buddy’s ability to pick up sports so quickly during the early 2000s was one of the greatest drawbacks of the series,” explains one of the producers, “his raw athleticism was so impressive that audiences found it to be a bit unbelievable. Now that Buddy only has three and a half of the five senses, his struggle should be more relatable for viewers.”
The film is expected to hit theaters in Spring 2018.
